Deputy Discovers Arson Fire Inside Iron City Park
A Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputy on routine patrol New Year’s Eve discovered that an arson fire had been set inside Iron City Park.
According to reports filed through the department, the deputy was patrolling in the area around 11:45 p.m. He noticed that part of a pavilion had been burned and that the fire was still smoldering.
He quickly solicited assistance from members of the Iron City Fire Department. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the remaining “hot spots.”
Reports indicate the culprit placed a tire next to one of the support poles, then ignited the fire. The fire burned the tire, the support post, and some of the surrounding wood.
The pavilion is the property of the Iron City Lions Club. Club representatives estimated damages at around $500.
A keep watch was ordered for the park during coming weeks.
